Portraiture Workshop

Learn how to create stunning portraiture in this comprehensive photography workshop in Edmonton. We’ll begin with an in class session, where you’ll learn techniques to naturally light, compose, and how to run a successful portraiture shoot. Then, we’ll head out on location with some models and put everything you just learned, into practice.

Often times we associate great portraiture with beautiful, trendy people in glamorous places  but what about just ordinary, everyday people going about their lives? For both of these subjects, How do you tell their story? How do you create emotional impact? How do you draw your audience in to entice them to look at, or even buy your work? We’re going to teach you the techniques to create stunning portraiture of everyday people, in their natural environment.

What’s Covered in class?

  • Portraiture Styles –  We’ll introduce you to the 8 fundamental styles of portraiture and then we’ll focus on Environmental and Lifestyle.
  • Running a shoot – Working with your client beforehand to design their session and choose locations,
  • Composition and Design – Storytelling through images,
  • Angles – How shooting from different angles can change the look and feel of your images
  • Natural Light Techniques -How to use ambient light to enhance and give dimension to your subject.

After the in-class portion, we’re going to head out on location with some models so you can practice everything you learned! Under the guidance of the instructor you’ll have the opportunity to work with the models, pose them, choose backgrounds and experiment with diffusers and reflectors, using the lighting techniques learned in class.

Prerequisites Using Your DSLR or Mirrorless Camera OR familiarity shooting in manual mode
Bring With You
  • DSLR or Mirrorless Camera,
  • Batteries,
  • Memory Card,
  • A vehicle (in case we need to travel to another location),
  • As we’re outdoors, be sure to dress for the weather.
