Using Adobe Photoshop

Photoshop is without question the most used software by professional photographers and a practical knowledge of it is an essential part of a modern photographer’s toolkit.

In this photo we changed the shape of the hat to for a smoother look, minimized lines under baby’s eyes and adjusted the skin tone  (specifically on his feet). We also removed the metal support bar under the swing and added a texture to the photo.

  • How to remove objects and people from your images
  • Portrait retouching (pimple removal, skin smoothening, wrinkle removal, eye sharpening, teeth whitening, etc.)

In this photo we removed the lamp post, light spots,  the light stand, and cleaned up the pavement. We also used layers to create selective colouring.

At the CPLC, students are expected to bring in their own copy of Photoshop (CC or Elements, see below) on a laptop or iMac into class. Students are provided with a library of photos designed to teach specific principles of using Photoshop, but are also encouraged to bring in their own.

Using Adobe Photoshop CC and Elements uses the popular and successful format of The CPLC’s “Using Your DSLR Camera” of teaching a principle, and then having the students perform the principle on their computer in class, following along with the instructor and then doing guided exercises in class. In addition, the course also includes homework designed to solidify the techniques in the mind and practice of the students. It’s easy to follow along in class, but the techniques can be lost if you don’t use them right away for the brain to encode the memories. As such, the course employs homework that is submitted for review in order to ensure students are using all the techniques of memorization so the concepts stick.

At the end of Using Photoshop CC and Elements, students will be fully proficient in editing images for color, brightness, applying different and trendy special effects to make your images look modern, and fixing errors in the images. The student will also be able to discuss with others the nuances of many subjects that are difficult to understand, including the details of sharpening for different sizes, hue, saturation, and luminance, levels, histograms, and much more.

In this photo we removed people from the waterfall, removed signage, cleaned the lens, reduced the glare on the bride’s face and enhanced the color of the water.

Adobe Photoshop CC & Adobe Photoshop Elements

Photoshop CC is the current version of the program formally known as Photoshop CS or just Photoshop. Originally, Photoshop Elements was a very different program from Photoshop CC, however as of Elements 12, the two programs overlap nearly identically in the most important and most used functions.

As such, we are now able to offer a Photoshop class that can be taken by students owning either Photoshop CC or the current version of Photoshop Elements.

A note on Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

Using Adobe Photoshop is a course based on the premise that the students will use Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for file management and basic editing, and then use Adobe Photoshop [CC/Elements] for the techniques listed above. This is the standard workflow of professional photographers. For the ideal experience, we recommend taking Using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom before this class. However, because the two programs differ in what they do to photos, it can be taken out of order.

What Do I Need to Bring to Class?

You do not need to know anything about Photoshop before taking the class, though make sure after you install it that you can locate and open it on your computer.

You will need to have either Adobe Photoshop CC, which you pay a nominal monthly fee for (and it includes Adobe Photoshop Lightrooom!) or Adobe Photoshop Elements which retails for around $80, and often much less.  Versions of Photoshop Elements other than the current one can be used in class, but there will be features in the current Elements that are not present in previous versions.

Because image processing is a memory-intensive process, and more-so because Photoshop requires your images to file manage, the only meaningful way to teach the program is on the student’s own computer.

As such, this course requires Photoshop CC or Elements to be installed on a laptop or self contained computer (like an Apple iMac) to be brought to, and taken away from class daily.

The student is responsible for making sure their computer exceeds the minimum requirements for using Photoshop CC and Elements, as it is is a memory-intensive program, it requires a sufficient computer to run it effectively.
